european adventure: austria
may 8:
this day we woke up and headed from padova to salzburg, austria. the bus ride was about a five plus hour one, but a five plus hour gorgeous one.
the bus we had was neat. it had this table at the back and seats that wrapped around the entire table. holly, stacy, taylor and i kind of staked it out. that way we could all lay down and such.
we stopped somewhere in the middle of the gorgeousness that we were driving through for lunch. it was probably the only miserable experience i had on the entire trip. it was only bad because everything was fish or something gross.. and it was so expensive, because it was in the middle of nowhere. literally, the mountains. it was so loud and crazy, and everyone was shouting things in german... yikes. ah! so confusing. but the drive totally made up for everything. austria is probably the most beautiful places that i have ever been to. and i thought that the green in belgium and france was great. but it was nothing compared to austria.
we got to our hostel and set out to explore. our beds were so so comfy.
this was the view from our hostel... the building on the tip top is the castle of salzburg.
we walked to areas that they filmed parts of the sound of music to. walking there was gorgeous. the buildings and such are beautiful.
that was great fun. seriously though. austria was gorgeous. the flowers, grass, people. buildings, mountains... i was so happy to see mountains. they reminded me of home. also, salzburg was a lot less crowded than coming from paris, rome or venice.
we saw this church there. it was amazing. austria just felt so clean. also, all the buildings were so pretty. they were just soft pastels and such.
we were walking to the cemetery where they filmed that part from the sound of music and on our way we passed the greatest looking pretzels. our teacher, brother flora, got each of us one. and let me tell you. it was the best thing ever! mine was filled with vanilla filling and chocolate on the top. the cute old lady selling them at the stand said to us in her broken english that the pretzel that i was eating was where she gained all her kilo's from.. as she pointed at her stomach. i don't blame her. they were to die for.
we saw the cemetery...
then we had to head back to the hostel for dinner. it was quite good. then everyone from our group got in pajamas and they were all going to watch the sound of music in the hostel. um, no. are you kidding me. i could watch the sound of music in my basement or somewhere less awesome. so, holly, stacy, taylor and i... oh and brother flora and vanessa also came. but we headed out to explore. we found these lovely buildings.. we always seemed to end up in the plaza here... and i found the best graffiti ever. if i was going to graffiti, i would also graffiti gelato too.
we walked up the hill the the nunnery, and to see the salzburg castle. we started walking up the hill and met a man from antartica. i can't say that that has ever happened to me. cool cool. anyway we kept walking and made it to the convent. we made it just in time to hear the nuns sing. they sounded something like what you picture angels to sound like. the acoustics were great as well. it echoed off the mountain and trickled down to the valley below. so as we walked around the chapel we could hear the nuns sing. one of the nuns came to close the gates for closing time, but waved at us all cute. it made me miss rome and our cute convent that we stayed in. they are adorable.
then we hiked up the other half of the mountain to the salzburg castle/fortress or whatever it was. it was about eight at night so we were the only ones there in the entire castle. it was fun to be one of six people in a castle. can't say that that has ever happened to me before either.
we watched the sun set.
you could see the whole city from where we were. that castle was pretty neat.
then we made our way back down into town. we happened upon some cute church choir ladies that were just singing outside.
our teacher and vanessa left to go rest and watch the sound of music. while everyone was watching it, we were out experiencing it. taylor and stacy said that we won the award for being the most fun, because we actually do cool things. but it was not curfew yet, so there was no way that i was leaving. so our foursome made way for more adventures. but it wasn't too soon that we got distracted by ice cream. yes, i said ice cream.
goodbye italy and gelato... and welcome back to reality. we found a free concert. it was SO fun.
i feel like people over there appreciate music and art so much more. then on the way home we see this big tall shadow.. and it kept coming closer. our teachers had always told us that if people start following you to just ignore it.. but after the whole shebang that happened in the metro in paris i was a little worried. so we turned around and guess who... it was one of our teachers that just needed to make an atm run. geez... can you believe that the four of us wandered everywhere alone and still made it out alive? i hardly can. we stayed up super late to do some wash.. but you do what you got to do for clean clothes... it was sad to only be in austria for a day. but we made every second count.
